Retirement Formula
Annual living expenses × 33 = required portfolio size
The logic: once your portfolio reaches 33× annual living expenses, you can pledge-borrow at ~3% to cover one year of cash flow without selling any asset. Meanwhile, the portfolio grows at ~10% annualized — far above the 3% borrowing rate; net worth keeps expanding.
| Monthly Expenses | Annual Expenses | Required Portfolio |
|---|---|---|
| $3,000 USD | $36,000 USD | $1.19M USD |
| $5,000 USD | $60,000 USD | $1.98M USD |
| $8,333 USD | $100,000 USD | $3.30M USD |
| NT$100K | NT$1.2M | NT$39.6M |
| NT$50K | NT$600K | NT$19.8M |
Pledge-for-living operating logic
Step 1: pledge your portfolio (NASDAQ-100 index fund) to the bank or broker. Step 2: bank lends at 2–3% annual interest, no more than 20% of position market value. Step 3: use the borrowed cash for daily living. Step 4: assets stay in the market, growing at ~10% annualized. Step 5: since asset growth (~10%) far exceeds borrowing rate (2–3%), net assets expand every year. Step 6: not selling means no capital-gains tax event. You have achieved “never pay tax” within legal framework.
Step 7: at death, assets and debts pass to the next generation as estate. The debt is small relative to asset scale; heirs receive a growing portfolio.
