In the pursuit of financial freedom, asset allocation strategies play a key role. This article will introduce the "433 asset allocation" long-term investment concept advocated by Mr. CLEC James. This strategy emphasizes focusing on investing in U.S. index funds (such as QQQ), long-term holdings, not selling assets, and making good use of stock pledged borrowing and cash ratios to control risks. By withdrawing only about 2% of total assets each year for living expenses, regularly rebalancing the investment portfolio, and maintaining an adequate cash safety margin, investors have the opportunity to grow their assets steadily. Below we will introduce the core philosophy and operation methods of 433 allocation, and use actual cases to illustrate how to start with 60 million assets, build several times wealth over more than ten years, and hopefully accumulate assets of hundreds of millions in the long run.

CLEC James' investment philosophy: hold indexes for the long term, avoid selling assets, and control risk with cash

CLEC Mr. James's core investment philosophy is based on the belief that "the market will only rise in the long run." Therefore, he emphasized that investments should be based on the long term and not frequently jump in and out due to short-term fluctuations. Key philosophical points include:

  • Focus on U.S. index funds and hold through volatility: James believes index funds are the best choice for most investors. He especially recommends ETFs that track the Nasdaq 100 Index, such as QQQ in the United States; Taiwan investors can choose corresponding products such as Fubon Nasdaq 100 Index Fund 00662. After buying, the principle is to "hold no matter what" and patiently wait for long-term growth instead of reacting to daily market moves. He advocates a calm, meditative investment mindset.

  • Stay steady and do not listen to short-term news or analyst forecasts.

  • Do not sell assets; use stock pledge loans for cash flow: to cover living expenses without selling stock assets, he advocates stock pledge loans, borrowing from securities firms with held stocks as collateral.

As long as the asset size is sufficient, a small amount of funds can be pledged from the investment portfolio every year for living expenses without touching the principal. In this way, assets can continue to remain in the market and increase in value while meeting cash flow needs.

James recommends that annual pledged borrowing stay around 2% of total assets and that assets should not be forcibly sold for repayment. Loans can be rolled over by borrowing new funds to repay old ones, allowing the portfolio to continue growing. He emphasizes that people who do not understand pledge-loan risks should not use this strategy casually.

This avoids being forced to sell stocks because of an insufficient maintenance ratio during a sharp market drop.

  • Pay attention to cash positions and control leverage risks: Cash plays the role of "shock absorber" in his strategy. Mr. James believes that retaining enough cash is extremely important for risk control and can provide a safety cushion when the market falls.

He even pointed out that the return on investment of maintaining a cash position is not necessarily lower than investing in full, but the safety is greatly improved.

When investing with leveraged funds, a high proportion of cash is needed to reduce volatility risks.

For those who use stock pledge strategies, he put forward clear risk control principles:

What is 433 Asset Allocation? QQQ + QLD + golden combination of cash

The cash position must always be greater than or equal to the pledged loan amount. In this way, even if the market experiences an extreme decline, investors will have sufficient cash to cope with calls or repay loans, and avoid being forced to liquidate their positions.

All in all, Mr. James’s investment philosophy can be summarized as follows: focus on the long term, concentrate on high-quality indexes, make good use of leveraged cash, and strictly adhere to the bottom line of risk. Under this concept, he further extended the actual asset allocation strategy, which is the famous 433 allocation model.

What is 433 asset allocation? The QQQ + QLD + cash combination

"433 Asset Allocation" is an asset allocation model advocated by CLEC James. Its name represents the allocation ratio of assets in three types of targets: 40%: 30%: 30%. Specifically:

The performance of QLD is approximately equal to twice the daily rise and fall of QQQ. Moderate addition of leverage can increase the overall reward potential.

  • 40% is allocated to a U.S. Nasdaq 100 index fund, such as Invesco QQQ ETF (QQQ). This is the main long-term growth engine, investing in the 100 largest U.S. technology leaders by market capitalization.

  • 30% allocated to a 2x leveraged Nasdaq 100 index fund such as QLD issued by ProShares.

The performance of QLD is approximately twice the daily rise and fall of QQQ. Moderate addition of leverage can increase the overall reward potential.

  • 30% is allocated to cash assets such as short-term bonds or money market funds, such as U.S. Treasury Bills ETF or highly liquid money market funds (such as Taiwan's 00865B, the United States' SGOV, etc.). These assets have low volatility and high liquidity, and are mainly used as cash buffers and safety cushions.

The above ratio is not static, but meets several key principles: the cash ratio is no less than 30%, the ratio of leveraged funds (QLD) is no higher than the ratio of non-leveraged index funds (QQQ), and is no higher than the cash ratio, so that the Beta value (volatility risk) of the overall portfolio does not exceed 1.0.

In short, by adding cash and moderate leverage to the investment portfolio, the risk level is similar to that of pure stock market investment (Beta is approximately equal to 1 in the market), but the capital efficiency can be improved.

Why configure it like this?

Because putting 100% directly into QQQ may produce strong long-term returns, but assets can shrink sharply during a major drawdown, putting both mindset and finances under pressure.

Therefore, 433 is regarded as a conservative strategy that takes into account both offense and defense** to achieve long-term stable growth

The 433 allocation uses the combination principle of "leverage + cash" to allow investors to maintain close to 100% stock market exposure while still retaining a considerable proportion of cash on hand.

Cash can provide insurance when the market plummets, and can also be used to increase bargaining or emergency response; the leverage part improves asset utilization, giving the overall rate of return a chance to be better than simply holding the index.

Research backtesting also pointed out that this type of diversified allocation can help improve long-term risk-adjusted returns (such as Sharpe Ratio), while reducing the maximum drawdown and shortening the asset recovery time.

Therefore, 433 is regarded as a conservative strategy that takes into account both offense and defense to achieve long-term stable growth.

It is worth mentioning that 433 is not the only option, as long as the above principles are adhered to, there are other flexible variants, such as 424 (40% QQQ / 20% QLD / 40% cash), 523 (50% QQQ / 20% QLD / 30% cash) or 514 (50% QQQ / 10% QLD / 40% cash) etc.

What these configurations have in common is that cash accounts for at least about 30%, the QLD> position does not exceed QQQ, and the leverage ratio is adjusted to change the degree of aggressiveness or conservatism.

At the same time, regular rebalancing every year is also a necessary step. By selling high and buying low, the asset proportion is brought back to the target allocation, so that the portfolio risk is maintained within the design range.

In summary, the 433 model provides a clear framework that allows investors to participate in the long-term growth of the stock market while maintaining appropriate cash to manage risk.

Practical Case: Growing from 60 Million to 200 Million, Then Toward 700 Million

The above ideas may sound abstract, but let’s see them in action.

A 35-year-old investor (a student of Mr. James) with assets of about 60 million yuan decided to retire early and adopt the 433 strategy for long-term investment.

His goal is to withdraw a small portion of his assets for living expenses every year, so as to maintain a good quality of life without compromising the potential for wealth growth. Here are the key steps in this case:

  • Starting asset allocation (year 0): The investor will allocate all assets according to the 433 model: approx.

In the initial state of such a combination, Beta is about 1, and the long-term growth momentum of stock assets and cash defense coexist.

40% (24 million) is bought into the Nasdaq 100 Index Fund QQQ, 30% (18 million) is invested in the 2x leveraged Nasdaq Index ETF - QLD, and the other 30% (18 million) is put into cash equivalents such as short-term U.S. dollar bonds or money market funds.

In the initial state of such a combination, Beta is about 1, and the long-term growth momentum of stock assets and cash defense coexist.

  • Withdraw 2% every year for living expenses (without selling assets):

After adopting this allocation, he withdraws cash equivalent to 2% of total assets through stock pledge borrowing every year for living expenses.

Taking 60 million as an example, 2% is 1.2 million, enough to support a year of living expenses at an average of 100,000 per month. The important point is that the 1.2 million is not raised by selling stocks.

Instead, use the stocks you hold as collateral to borrow money from a securities firm.

Since the borrowing interest rate is relatively low and the amount accounts for only a small part of the assets, he can choose to extend the old loan or repay the old loan after paying interest every year, while the stock assets remain intact in the market and continue to appreciate. In this way, daily necessities are met, and the principal of the investment portfolio is not used or weakened.

  • Asset growth after ten years (10th year): Under this strategy, assuming that the Nasdaq Index (QQQ) maintains an annualized rate of return of about 12% for a long time (close to the historical average), then after 10 years of compound interest growth, the total market value of the investment portfolio will increase from the initial 60 million to about 200 million yuan.

During this period, he pledged to withdraw 1.2 million yuan every year, and spent a total of about 12 million yuan in living expenses in ten years. With the loan interest rolled into new loans, the total pledged loans were about 14 million yuan. Although debt seems to have increased, because assets continue to grow, pledged arrears only account for about 7% of total assets (14 million versus 200 million), and the overall finances are still very healthy. In other words, after an economic cycle, investors not only live a comfortable retirement life, but their net asset value also increases significantly; the loans they bear are only superficial compared to their assets, and the risks are extremely low.

  • Risk management and rebalancing: After doubling assets, Mr. James recommends making appropriate rebalancing adjustments to consolidate the winning results.

For example, at the end of year 10, he recommends that the investor first move an amount equal to twice the amount owed on the pledge into a cash position as a safety cushion.

Taking the arrears of RMB 14 million as an example, cash of approximately RMB 28 million (accounting for approximately 14% of total assets) was transferred to ensure that the cash is much higher than the loan balance and improve the ability to resist risks.

The remaining assets (approximately RMB 172 million) were re-allocated according to the 433 ratio, allowing the new portfolio to continue to maintain a status of Beta≈1 and abundant cash in terms of the expanded asset scale.

After this adjustment, the portfolio becomes more stable, and the annual 2% withdrawal can be calculated from assets of 200 million: about 4 million per year, or more than 330,000 per month, allowing the investor to enjoy the fruits of asset growth.

Long-Term Outlook (Year 30): Even more amazing is the long-term compounding effect of this strategy

According to the hypothesis asked by the student, if this investor continues to use the same method for 30 years, and the market can maintain an average annual return of about 12%, the final total assets are expected to increase from 60 million to about 719 million (nearly 720 million)!

By then, the size of the portfolio will far exceed the initial one, but his annual pledge expenditure will still be controlled within 2% of the total assets (it will increase accordingly with the growth of assets, but the proportion will remain unchanged), ensuring the continued operation of the principal. The 433 strategy is a similar practice to the wealth concept of "not spending assets, only spending the cash flow generated by assets": rely on the assets themselves to support assets, and ultimately achieve a snowball of wealth that grows bigger and bigger.

Through this case, we can see that the 433 allocation combined with the strategy of pledging cash withdrawals allows investors to achieve a win-win situation in wealth and life without selling any of their holdings.

On the one hand, they enjoy growing capital gains, and on the other hand, they also receive stable cash flow to meet living expenses.

The most important thing is that risks are strictly controlled throughout the entire process - sufficient cash ratio, moderate leverage, and restrained expenditures, so that even if there are market fluctuations, investors will not panic or be forced to exit the market.

Advice for Young Investors: Start with Emergency Reserves, Then Move Toward 433 Step by Step

Can the 433 strategy also be applied to young investors who are not yet rich in assets and are in the accumulation stage?

Principle: After accumulating reserves, young people can invest additional funds into index funds to start long-term investing. At the same time, pay attention to the proportion of cash positions. The goal is to have cash reserves equivalent to at least one year's living expenses. For example, if your annual expenditure is about 500,000 yuan, it is best to start with

Teacher James’s suggestion is to adjust according to the situation. In principle, ensure sufficient cash safety cushion first, and then gradually increase the investment proportion.

Specifically:

  • Build an emergency reserve: If you are just starting out or have few assets, your first goal is to have at least 1 year's worth of living expenses as an emergency reserve in cash or current assets. This money is available for emergencies so you don't get stuck if the market drops or you lose your job.

  • Principle: After accumulating reserves, young people can invest additional funds into index funds to start long-term investing. At the same time, pay attention to the proportion of cash positions. The goal is to have cash reserves equivalent to at least one year's living expenses. For example, if your annual expenditure is about 500,000 yuan, it is best to start with

With a one-year emergency reserve, you can start asset allocation when you have about 1.5 million in assets.

This number is approximately 30% of assets in cash (when the asset size reaches a certain level), and is also the basic requirement for the cash ratio of the 433 strategy.

If this ratio cannot be reached at the beginning, it doesn't matter. As income deposits increase, priority will be given to making up the safety cushion with excess funds before investing in the market.

Mr. James often says: "Retirees need to have assets equivalent to more than 33 times the annual expenditure to retire with peace of mind." For young people, although this is a long-term goal, they can start with asset allocation from 3 times the annual expenditure and gradually achieve it from 5 times the annual expenditure.

  • Use leverage step by step: In the early stages of asset accumulation, it is not recommended to use advanced strategies such as leveraged funds or stock pledges too early. If the assets are still small and unstable, leverage may magnify the risks rather than the gains. You should first accumulate principal steadily by investing a fixed amount on a regular basis or investing any spare money in index funds. When your assets and knowledge have grown to a certain level (for example, your assets reach millions or more and you have a deep understanding of the market), then consider introducing a small proportion of leveraged ETF with sufficient cash, or gradually adjust the allocation by referring to the 433 model.

In short, young investors can regard 433 as one of the directions and target configurations for long-term efforts. Before you do that, make sure you have your financial foundation in place—a strong emergency reserve, good savings habits, and full confidence in indexed investing.

As assets increase, slowly increase the allocation ratio of cash and investment, step by step towards a stable combination with a Beta value of 1.0.

Conclusion

It can be seen from the above philosophy and cases that "433 asset allocation" is not a complicated and difficult financial technique, but follows the most basic principles of investment: choose high-quality assets to hold for a long time, control risks, and follow the trend.

CLEC Teacher James demonstrated how to implement these principles in practice with simple and clear rules (40/30/30 allocation, pledging 2% every year for living expenses, strictly observing the cash and leverage ratio). The results also prove that as long as the strategy is executed with discipline, time will become the biggest ally and help the asset snowball grow bigger and bigger.

I wish every reader can find a long-term investment strategy that suits them and achieve financial peace of mind and freedom as soon as possible!

For anyone who yearns for financial freedom, the 433 strategy provides a path worthy of reference: it tells us that there is no need to frequently operate the market or guess the timing. As long as we insist on placing funds on the wave of long-term economic growth, while maintaining appropriate buffers and patience, we will have the opportunity to reap the gratifying fruits of wealth in a few years.

As Mr. James said: "The essence of investing is to let top companies work hard to make money for you, and you just have to make sure that you live long and hold on." - When we deploy assets in such a stable and intelligent way as 433, financial freedom may not be far away.

I wish every reader can find a long-term investment strategy that suits them and achieve financial peace of mind and freedom as soon as possible!
