Small Group Meeting Discussion Question (5). Written on August 22, 2018

Question five: How can we know in advance that a bubble is about to happen?

Answer:

We have said that we do not guarantee we can identify a bubble, nor do we guarantee that we can safely leave the market during one. But observing and analyzing whether a bubble is forming is one of our most important tasks in the market. We never spend energy on short-term trading or predictions.

The following are several signs of a bubble forming, and they are also the standards we watch when judging whether a bubble is occurring.

Whether the yield curve has inverted.

Whether real interest rates are too high.

Whether there is severe inflation.

Whether stock prices are three to five times higher than value.

Whether banks' short-term CD rates are higher than the Federal discount rate.

Whether the market has nontraditional financing channels.

Whether the market is too highly leveraged, with the risk of a broken funding chain.

Whether investors are overly optimistic and are entering the stock market with borrowed money.

Whether investing has become a mass movement, with your friends and relatives all becoming stock-market experts and stock gods who can recommend stocks to you.

When all of the above signs appear, we should be in the final stage of a bubble. But do not be too nervous. Markets can go crazy, but how crazy the market will become and how far people will go are not things we can predict. In the end, we still need to use the technical-analysis strategy of selling when the three lines turn downward.

Technical analysis absolutely cannot tell us whether a bubble is happening. But when we find that a bubble has already formed and is approaching its end, using technical-analysis sell signals can be a good operating method.

Chapter 92: I Think, Therefore I Am Joyful

Our life is about continuous learning. When you can understand a truth, you will be very happy. This is the source of happiness and joy. Socrates said that even if he faces death, he will be very happy because he has realized the wisdom of this life. In fact, there is no difference between getting rich faster and getting rich slower, because happiness does not come from wealth. As long as you can realize the wisdom of life bit by bit every day or slowly, there will be surprises every day and you can realize more or less every day.

Chapter 89: On Focus and Insight

Hello teacher, I remember that a few weeks ago my teacher talked about Lao Gao’s film about life and luck in the video. I later read a book called "The Science of Luck", which mentioned an experiment that left me a little confused about the balance between concentration and insight, so I wanted to ask the teacher for his thoughts. The experiment was like this: A research team recorded a video of a basketball game and asked the participants to continue to count the number of players wearing jerseys of different colors during the video. After the experiment, many people counted correctly.

Chapter 69 [Three Questions about Investment]

Question 1: I see that SPY/QQQ, etc. are at high levels recently (2019). Should I buy an ETF with high dividends and low volatility such as VYM when entering the market? Because the market is already at a high level now, the next correction should be very strong, right? Answer 1: We cannot predict the market! Some people claim to be able to predict the market, but we admit that we are not. You can invest in SPY, QQQ, or VYM, but what you need to consider is the long-term return.
