My daughter studied art and design. She started drawing when she was five. In middle school and high school, she kept searching for her future work and interests. In the end, she decided to keep moving toward drawing. There was a great deal of struggle along the way; many friends and relatives told her that people who study art cannot find jobs. She was also worried that if she kept drawing, she might not find work and might not be able to support herself. I kept encouraging her: as long as it is something you are interested in and you keep doing it, you will succeed. But if you do something you have no interest in, you will only live an ordinary life.

With my encouragement, my daughter finally had the courage to continue on the path of art, drawing, and design. At first she entered the design school at UC Davis. Later, she was not satisfied with UC Davis's curriculum because it was not challenging enough, so she insisted on transferring to RISD.

The transfer process was very hard. Every week, my daughter had to take the train from Davis back home to study drawing with a teacher and prepare her portfolio. It was hard, but because it was her own interest, she could overcome every difficulty and did not feel tired at all.

So I truly and strongly encourage all parents to encourage their children to do what they love. As long as they work hard and do their best to get into a good school, they will have very good development.

Although my daughter works in art and design, her current annual salary is also $120,000.

And design talent is now in extreme shortage, especially web design and UI. Her classmates from the same graduating year all found very good jobs within half a year. So do not worry about future employment. As long as someone develops real expertise and mastery, work and high pay are natural outcomes. This does not actually have a direct relationship with the major studied. Instead, interest is what allows someone to develop expertise, contribute knowledge, give to companies and society, and naturally receive high pay.

My father worked at the telecommunications bureau and was a standard civil servant. When I graduated from junior high school, my father always hoped I could enter a vocational high school's telecommunications bureau cooperative education program. I did get into that very hard-to-enter program as I wished, but I also got into the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University. My father kept telling me to attend the vocational high cooperative program, because after graduating I would not have to worry about work. Although I had already reported to the vocational high school, I insisted on attending a regular high school. In the end, registration at the affiliated high school was already one day late when I went to Kaohsiung to retrieve my junior high graduation certificate and report there. I told my father that if I became a civil servant, I could calculate my entire life's salary and work with a calculator, and in that case I might as well end my life now. So we must strongly support and encourage children's wishes and interests, and let them fulfill their dreams in life.

We come to life to learn, not to work, and certainly not to use our labor to earn money. We need to fulfill our dreams in life. I also hope you can encourage your sons and daughters to move bravely toward their own dreams, and not force them to do things they dislike. Besides, their dreams may be in a very promising direction.
