What I Teach Is the Way of Investing: Believing, Accepting, and Acting Are the Real Keys

A student who works in consulting and studies Chinese fate analysis writes with three reflections: taking the first step requires courage and largeness of heart, prenuptial agreements are really about the law of attraction, and meeting a big drawdown on her first investment was a gift; James replies that asking too many whys wastes a life, and that a parent's contradictory thoughts issue an instruction to heaven.

Teacher, today I watched your new video for this week. It moved me deeply! So I am sending you an email; I hope you will not find it a bother. Let me tell you how I felt.

First, about the gentleman from mainland China today who told you he had cut his losses on a fund and reinvested the money in the Nasdaq. I think your answer was very philosophical: if a person cannot take the first step, there is simply no way to take the next step down the right road. That takes enormous courage and largeness of heart. I work in consulting myself, and in fact, looking at each person's life through the tools of Chinese fate analysis, many principles turn out to be the same: having the courage to do something is destiny, and getting the opportunity is fortune, which is what you mean by a turning point and a major fortune cycle every ten years. For example, meeting you is the first step: first understand, then trust, then act. Why do people keep asking? They want an answer. But in fact there is no need to ask, because you have always said, buy when you have money and never sell. So even after asking, people who dare not cut their losses still will not cut them, which is why asking is unnecessary. I also often meet people who constantly need someone else to make decisions for them. I always say your destiny is your own; we can only offer you choices, and you cannot expect others to tell you which road to walk! And as for investing, I do not yet have the largeness of heart to go all in, and my income is not entirely stable, so I invest a fixed amount regularly, because sometimes you have to go at a pace that feels comfortable to you; there is no need to ask others and make them carry your decision for you! Do things on the scale of your own heart and your own vision of wealth! Which is exactly what you said: do not ask about individual stocks and do not ask about anything else!

Second, what moved me most was that at the end you mentioned the matter of prenuptial agreements between husband and wife! I left you a comment today as well, but I felt it was not enough, so I want to share it with you here too! In my work I come across a great many cases involving relationships. Our generation was relatively simple: love was love, we did not mix in too much else, and we did not really scheme against each other! The situation now is that men scheme against women and women scheme against men. The reason that person asked you about prenuptial agreements today is that very often people cannot see through others, so there is a problem in how they choose. But at bottom it is the law of attraction! If I do not scheme against others in a relationship, then the people I attract will not really scheme against me either; and even if some do, in the end they feel too ashamed to deceive me. Or if they are that kind of person, they will assume I am more complicated than I am, only to discover afterwards that I am not complicated at all. So I have always been curious about what kind of person you really are, that you can teach investing to all beings so selflessly, when so many people charge for it. You even published an autobiography so that everyone could understand your past and your investing history; you have thought of everything that needed thinking about. I have never seen anything like it. Those people back home keep selling courses at very, very high prices (I never buy them), but why will people not invest in the simplest index fund, and instead cling to individual stocks? There is greed, there is the wish to speculate, but in the end I came to understand that it is a lack of blessings! That you have money is really your blessings taking material form: kind from childhood, helping others, respecting people, with strong empathy, and now on top of that your ideas today, what you said about love, about why you would scheme against your other half. Just give to the other person! I said this to my husband, and he said it is because you have money that you give. I said no: rich people are often stingier and more calculating, because I have handled quite a few cases in which people with money hid it from their partner, would not spend it on them, and only thought about spending someone else's money! They will even go to others and say their partner offers no emotional value. There are far too many cases like this! Honestly I think it is not easy for men either! And of course men scheme against women too; it happens on both sides! Hearing how you brought up your own daughter, I sighed in admiration! I raise my child the same way. We should not always be looking to take advantage of others; we should be willing to give. Whether you do well in school does not matter; learning to invest and being a good person matters most! In short, every time I listen to your class, one sentence wakes me up! It brings me to tears (really to tears; I am rather emotional).

Third, while I was investing in the Nasdaq, I was in fact also invested in an A-share fund, which has been plunging lately while the Nasdaq stayed very steady. I feel that running into something like this on my very first investment in life is simply a gift from heaven: veteran investors never meet anything this dramatic, and I met it, which taught me that I must never invest in other funds out of wishful thinking. But my heart is not yet large enough, and I cannot bring myself to cut the loss; I will not hide that from you. What I want to say is that meeting a big drawdown at the very start is a good thing. The most dangerous thing in speculation is making money right at the beginning. And through this episode I discovered my own trading mistakes. I think it was worth it.

In short, that you were fortunate enough to meet a benefactor who told you to invest, and that you have given this love away so selflessly, is an act of immeasurable merit. The day before yesterday I shared your autobiography with someone close to me, and I do not think she read it. Of course whether she reads it does not matter; that is a matter of blessings! This year is also a turning point in my life, and meeting you is a blessing I have been accumulating all along! So I am writing you another letter. I hope I am not disturbing you. If I have other things to share in the future I will keep telling you about them! Hee hee!

James's Reply

I was moved to receive your letter. You are someone who understands fate analysis and knows what human nature is.

Also, when we hand someone a pen or an answer, people still come and ask why. Why are you giving me this pen? Why are you giving me this advice about my life? If you ask too many whys in life, that really is a waste of life. Just take the pen and use it. Unless you do not trust this person, in which case, if you do not trust him and yet you still go and ask him, is that not a contradiction?

Of course, an answer that looks very direct and very obvious to us may not necessarily be something everyone can understand, accept, and act on! So when we offer an answer, the question is how to make it not only logically correct but also something people can feel, understand, and carry out; there is still a gap in between! How to sense the students' state of mind, and the gap between teaching and doing, is where I need to learn and improve!

People are often contradictory in their thinking and their behavior. You want your children's marriages to be happy, yet in your head you are thinking, "If they get divorced, I do not want my property divided with the other side; I do not want my child's spouse to benefit." You want their marriage to be happy and at the same time you are thinking about their divorce. The power of our subconscious is very great, and when you hold the thought "if there is a divorce, our property must not be taken by outsiders," you are issuing an instruction to heaven: your children will divorce. Why would parents place such a curse on their children's marriages?

God loves us and Guanyin is compassionate. Do we need to ask why?

Love, romantic love, the ones we love, treating our parents as parents and our children as children, sharing and caring: these are all human nature, and there is no need to ask why.

I believe that my wealth, my character, my whole life, and my past are all heaven's best arrangement. That I have come this far, and that I have come to teach investing, is also heaven's best arrangement. Heaven has arranged for me to be very wealthy, very happy, very blessed, and to have enough energy to share with everyone. Heaven is so kind to us.

"Being wealthy is a gift; being happy is a human right!"

This is what heaven has given us. Heaven gave me wealth and also gave me this state of mind, so that I would be in a position to relay heaven's will and tell it to everyone.

Chapter 37 [The Market Is Always Rising]

The market decline is temporary, the long-term market is always up, and investing in US index funds will have high returns in the long run. When the market panics the most, try to calm down, “The market panics and I'm greedy." Therefore, when the market falls, we must bravely hold index funds, and even have money to buy more at low prices. Index funds are the overall US market, the entire United States, the United States of America that has continued to innovate for a long time, and the United States that is a fair and fair open market. In the long run, it will only rise. In the past 100 years, in the past 200 years,

Chapter 43 [It Is Not That We Do Not Trade; We Decide Not to Trade!]

Many friends ask: James, you used to trade, and you traded quite well, avoiding the bubbles in 2000 and 2008. Why not avoid this one and instead face the market decline? Is that really a good approach? In fact, every strategy has strengths and weaknesses. If we want to help the general public invest successfully, we can only use a method that ordinary people can actually follow.

[Investment Philosophy (6)] - Think independently when facing the market

[Investment Philosophy (6)] Think independently when facing the market. One of the keys to success for investors in the market is to think independently. Studying in class, reading books, and reading our investment columns are all part of learning. [Having] can be taught, learned, and researched, but [Having] is only part of investment success. Successful investors all have a "no" part, which is based on the "have" of correct investment knowledge and internalized into self-independent thinking.
