For the Newly Retired and Unsure: Step by Step Toward a Happy Retirement

Build a rhythm for retirement through small daily activities, plants, coffee, fishkeeping, AI-assisted life writing, and sharing.

When you were working, every day came with a timetable, tasks, and people waiting for you to account for things. After decades of being busy, you finally retire and suddenly have plenty of time, yet you do not know how to arrange it. You may even feel that life has lost its center.

If you feel this way too, do not blame yourself.

We spent many years learning how to work. We can also give ourselves a little time to learn how to live in retirement. You do not need to find a new purpose in life immediately. Start with one small thing you can do.

Here are a few steps I would like to share, including some of the things I enjoy in my own life.

🌱 Step 1: Give Each Day a Little Rhythm

Try this for two weeks: do three small things at set times each day.

① Go out for a twenty- or thirty-minute walk in the morning.

② Spend twenty minutes during the day learning something that interests you.

③ Write three sentences in the evening: what you did today, what you discovered, and what you would like to try tomorrow.

You can spend the rest of the time doing housework, being with family, or resting. There is no need to fill the entire day.

It is fine if you finish only one thing in a day. You do not need to catch up. First, give your life a comfortable rhythm.

🌿 Step 2: Grow a Plant and Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To

One of the things I enjoy in life is growing flowers and fruit.

Watching seeds sprout, new leaves emerge, and plants flower and bear fruit lets you feel the power of life. Looking at them when you get up gives you one more thing to look forward to each day.

Visit a nearby flower market or a plant stall at a traditional market, and choose one or two plants suited to your home. In Taipei, you can also visit the Jianguo Flower Market.

First tell the seller how much sunlight your home gets and whether the plants will be on a balcony or indoors. Ask for varieties suited to the local season that are easy to care for.

You can also experiment with growing chili pepper or tomato seeds from home. First learn the right season for sowing, then gradually learn what you can grow in spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Even if you live in an apartment, you can start with one flowerpot. Take a photograph on the first day and watch how it changes. That is your first record of daily life.

☕ Step 3: Find a Café and Practice Taking Time to Enjoy Yourself

I also enjoy drinking coffee.

Choose one day each week, or once every day or two, to visit a café you like. Sit for an hour or two and slowly savor a cup of coffee.

You do not need to seek out famous cafés or spend a lot of money. Bring a book, write a few journal notes, and observe the life around you.

If the barista is not busy and is willing to chat, ask why they like coffee or what is special about the beans in your cup.

You will see other people's enthusiasm for their work. Talking with younger people may also introduce you to new ideas.

It is fine if you do not drink coffee. A teahouse, a library, or a park can also become a place you look forward to visiting.

🐠 Step 4: Choose an Interest You Are Willing to Explore Gradually

Another interest of mine is keeping fish.

Observing their behavior and appreciating the arrangement of an aquarium reveals many things worth learning. Different fish even have different ways of breeding and caring for their young.

If you are interested, first visit an aquarium shop to learn about the equipment, costs, and care involved. Once you are sure you are willing to look after the fish, start with a suitable, easy-to-maintain aquarium. Learn how to prepare the environment and condition the water before welcoming the fish.

You could also choose photography, cooking, painting, singing, or studying history and cultures you have always been curious about.

There is no need to develop five interests at once. Choose one, give it a try, and then see whether you want to continue.

🤖 Step 5: Learn to Use AI to Organize Your Life Experiences

After retirement, remain curious about the world around you.

I strongly encourage everyone to learn to use AI to organize their experiences, knowledge, and ideas.

If you do not know where to begin, tell the AI:

“I want to record my life experiences. Please ask me one question at a time, starting with my first job. After I answer, help me turn it into a life journal entry of about three hundred characters. Keep my voice, and do not add anything I have not said.”

If you do not like typing, first speak into your phone for three minutes, then ask AI to help organize it. Read it yourself afterward to make sure the content is correct and conveys what you mean.

Write one piece, then the next. Over time, they may add up to a book of your own.

📷 Step 6: Record Your Life and Be Willing to Share It

When your plants grow new leaves, take a photograph.

When you finish arranging your aquarium, record a short video.

When you enjoy a cup of coffee, write down how it makes you feel.

When you see a view while traveling, record how you felt at that moment.

If you have insights about investing, you can also share your investment and retirement experiences: how you started, what you once worried about, what mistakes you made, and what you learned afterward.

The experience you have accumulated over a lifetime may be just the inspiration someone else needs.

You can ask AI to help organize an article or a video script, then post it on X or Facebook, or record a video and upload it to YouTube. You do not need to buy equipment first or aim for polished editing. Before publishing other people's photographs or conversations, get their permission.

Do not worry at first about how many people see it. Just get started.

Share it if you want to make it public. If you are not ready, you can keep it for yourself and your family.

You are recording your own life and leaving a trace of your journey. Its value does not need to be proved by other people's likes.

🗓️ Step 7: After Two Weeks, Keep the Things You Want to Continue

After two weeks, ask yourself:

“Which thing makes me want to do it again tomorrow?”

“At what moment did I feel that today was a good day?”

Give more time to the things you enjoy, and replace the things that do not suit you. Each week, also arrange to meet friends, take a walk with family, or join a nearby activity, so that your life includes contact with others.

You do not need to turn your interests into work or produce results every day. Being able to rest peacefully is also part of retirement.

Tomorrow, perhaps start by going out for a walk, bringing a plant home, taking a photograph, and writing:

“Today, I began practicing how to live my own retirement.”

Happiness may not come immediately, but you can start with one small thing and gradually find things to look forward to and enjoy.

May we remain curious about the world after retirement, willing to learn, willing to share, and willing to enjoy each day of our lives.

What I Teach Is the Way of Investing: Believing, Accepting, and Acting Are the Real Keys

A student who works in consulting and studies Chinese fate analysis writes with three reflections: taking the first step requires courage and largeness of heart, prenuptial agreements are really about the law of attraction, and meeting a big drawdown on her first investment was a gift; James replies that asking too many whys wastes a life, and that a parent's contradictory thoughts issue an instruction to heaven.

Chapter 50 [Must he avoid danger? There is another option called taking the risk! 】

If we think from a longer-term perspective, inflation will eventually pass and the economy will recover one day. The damage of inflation cannot be completely avoided, but we should not be too afraid of impairments on investment assets, because for high-quality assets, price fluctuations are only temporary phenomena. What investors need to do is to avoid chasing highs and selling lows during times of panic. They don’t always have to think about hedging, but rather bear these fluctuations. If you do not have the ability to judge the future direction but blindly want to avoid risks, you may
